We didn’t get to choose the childhood we were given, but we can choose what to do with the stuff of our childhood memories. My father, Thomas Earl Woods was born in the north east corner of Stokes County, east of Sandy Ridge, some where between Amostown road and Ayersville Road (NC Hwy 770).
I have a few memories from my childhood of Dad and Mom spending an occasional Sunday afternoon on the banks of the Mayo River. My life after this did not bring me back to the Mayo River until last summer. My wife and I decided to spend a Sunday afternoon exploring the Mayo River. It is still an untamed river and beautiful. Although there are a few more people living in the area, the river remains unchanged.
Fortunately the State of North Carolina is slowly buying property along the river and creating a state park. It seems that if all goes well the park will stretch from the Virginia border down river to the town of Mayodan.
