Danbury NC Woods Family History 511Mike Woods was browsing some court records from Stokes County and ran across some interesting information concerning our great grandfather William Jackson Woods. Further search turned up a small clip in the Danbury newspaper “The Danbury Reporter” that was printed Sept 18, 1910.

Some members of my family were arrested for fighting in Danbury, NC in the year 1910. According to The Danbury Reporter issue 9/28/1910, Will Woods, Ollie Woods, Gabe Woods and Roy Shelton were found guilty of fighting in the streets of Danbury.

For those that are unfamiliar with the Town of Danbury, it is the county seat of Stokes County. The town basically consists of the County court house and two churches. The old court house is now a museum.

The “Will” was my great grandfather William Jackson Woods. Ollie and Gabe were his sons. Roy Shelton was a family friend.

The newspaper does not shed any light on why the fighting happened. I do not know if they were fighting among themselves of with someone else. I assume that it was a family squabble since no other names were mentioned.

The fines were not equal…….Interesting information about the split. Each paid 1/4 the court cost. Fines levied against Will Woods and Roy Shelton were suspended. The fine levied against Gabe Woods was in the amount of $10.00 and the fine to Ollie was $50.00.

Ollie was always know as the quite type and never a trouble maker. Judging by the size of the fines, one would gather that Ollie came out of his shell that day.
